Commencement Ceremony of the SafeChina project and its joint venture “Steinbeis R-Tech Beijing”

The SafeChina project approaches its planned end in February 2013. The project main aim has been to build a sustainable education service in China offering the engineers and relevant professions the possibility to learn about the EU safety practices and regulation, and qualify as Environmental- and Safety engineers according to EU criteria, guidelines and practice. The project has been financed by Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH (DEG - German Investment and Development Agency) and realized by Steinbeis University Berlin (SHB) represented by Steinbeis Transfer Institute Advanced Risk Technologies (R-Tech) and Beijing Municipal Institute of Labor Protection (BMILP), as the main strategic partner of Steinbeis in China.

The SafeChina project has created:

a) a curriculum of courses in Risk Engineering and Management adapted to the needs of Chinese beneficiaries,

b) a pattern for on-the-job training in EU/Germany and 

c) a certifications scheme for Chinese professionals.

So far, the project has already achieved most of its goals, so far namely:

• performed a large-scale survey of Chinese needs in the area of industrial safety
• signed cooperation agreements with 17 Chinese partners
  
• signed cooperation agreements with INERIS, France and DEKRA, Germany
• prepared the curriculum of 12 full courses, fully translated in Chinese
• organized 14 instances of the above courses, attended by almost 500 participants
  
• certified over 400 professionals (passed various levels of exams)
• had already 14 short and 3 long on-the-job-trainings for Chinese professionals in Germany 
  
• qualified 18 Chinese trainers in the framework of the train-the-trainer measures
• incorporated courses from the project in the curricula of one of the Chinese top-class universities, CUEB
  
• negotiates incorporation of the courses into one of the Chinese top universities, Tsinghua University
  
• negotiates incorporation of the courses into the professional education in Chinese companies (Sinopec, Ping An, etc.)
• prepares an independent German-Chinese joint venture ("Steinbeis Advanced Risk Technologies Beijing") which will continue project activities after the official DEG-project end, i.e. after February 2013.
  

The project activities performed so far have been evaluated as "excellent" or "very good" by approx. 90% of all the Chinese stakeholders/participants in the project.

The event will be the occasion to award Risk Examiner and Risk Assessor certificates to Chinese professionals, as well as to SafeChina trainers, certified in the "Train-the-Trainer" part of the SafeChina project.

About the hosting institution:

The Beijing Municipal Institute of Labor Protection was established in 1956 and is one of the first research institutes in China to carry out scientific research on security and environment. The institute has built many research institutes of professional techniques and test centers in the following three fields: urban security hygiene, work safety and labor protection and human living environment, which have laid solid foundation for a basic, applied and foresighted research. In the latest 50 years, it has achieved more than 500 scientific and technological results and won more than 200 awards for scientific and technological achievements and progress. It has stipulated more than 100 standards in labor protection and environment protection.

This course is the first step for people who are interested in Risk-Based Inspection (RBI). The fundamental concepts of RBI and its reliance on understanding damage mechanisms (API 571) and fitness for service concepts (API 579) will be introduced. The main topics will cover overviews of Probability of Failure, Consequences of Failure, Risk Analysis and Inspection Planning Based on Risk Analysis.

The 6th Working on Safety Conference will take place in Sopot (Poland), on September 11-14th, 2012.

The IRGC 2011 Annual Event on Risk Governance will take place on 3 November 2011 at the Rolex Learning Center on the EPFL campus in Lausanne, Switzerland. For this occasion, a public conference will be held starting at 17:00 on “Learning from large-scale industrial accidents”.  Following key note presentations, a panel of experts and practitioners from Japan, India, China, the United States and Europe will discuss how we have learned from and built better risk governance institutions and processes in the wake of past disasters, including the lessons that can be learned from the recent March 2011 Fukushima Dai-Ichi accident in Japan. Organised and hosted by University of Leeds in association with Queen’s University Management School and the Euromed Management School Marseille.

Corporate responsibility is a widely diverse topic and it is vital that in order to move both practice and theory forward we must acknowledge this diversity, create a community which shares its knowledge and work together to drive the agenda forward in a positive and sustainable way.  This has never been so important as it is now; many of the world’s economies are facing economic downturn and recession and the global economic and political balance is changing. 

 

Within corporate responsibility it is important to recognise the role of all types of organisations and actors; of course we must understand and develop the internal mechanisms available to corporations but we must also understand and help drive forward the wider context in which corporations work.  Similarity, with the increased growth of partnerships we must also work with other organisations in order to really understand and enhance corporate responses to sustainability.

The tradition of the CRRC is to focus on the participants and the debate, we aim to create an environment, which is welcoming and friendly yet challenges the existing knowledge base and drives the debate around corporate responsibility forward.   We are keen to invite a wide variety of participants from across disciplinary backgrounds, from a variety of academic departments and from practitioners.

The conference papers of a maximum of 6,000 words including references should be emailed to papers@crrconference.org no later than 15th August 2011. Please note that papers will not be accepted unless speaker(s) have registered in full for the conference.

 

PhD Workshop

Our popular pre-conference PhD Workshop will be held on the afternoon of 12 September.  It will appeal to first-time attendees as well as those who have attended throughout their PhD career.  This annual workshop provides a relaxed environment to allow lively exchange and discussion between PhD students as well as the opportunity to gain helpful advice and feedback from a panel of experienced PhD supervisors in the field.  We’ve also added some new bits to this year’s session including a collaborative session to identify emerging issues in the field and develop a research agenda for publication.  Be sure to join us and have your voice heard in setting a course for the future of CSR research.

 

Best Paper Awards

 The scientific committee of the conference will review all papers presented and award two prizes for the CRRC best overall paper and the CRRC best PhD paper at the conference dinner. Criteria for the selection process are contribution to the research field, quality of the research, innovativeness, and diversity of views.

SAFETY ISSUES OF NANOMATERIALS ALONG THEIR LIFE CYCLE is a two days Symposium that will be held on the 4th and 5th May 2011 at LEITAT Technological Center, Barcelona (Spain).

It is jointly organized by the coordinators of three European FP7 Projects NANOPOLYTOX, NEPHH and HINAMOX. The organizers are representing three Spanish institutions actively working in the field of nanotechnology: LEITAT Technological Centre (Barcelona), Ekotek (Bilbao) and CIC BiomaGUNE (San Sebastian), respectively.

The aim of the Symposium is to discuss about the human and environmental impacts of nanomaterials along their life cycle from their production through their processing, use, and end of life (recycling and/or disposal). Therefore, the tools and methodologies proposed for the risk assessment (RA) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of nanomaterials will be one of the main topics of discussion in this symposium.

A panel of experts at international level have been invited as speakers and lectures will be organized into six different sessions:

Session 1.International, national and regional initiatives on Nanotechnology / Nanosafety
Session 2.Nanomaterials: Synthesis, characterization and applications
Session 3.Human health impact of Nanomaterials
Session 4.Environmental impact of Nanomaterials

jointly organized by TÜV SÜD and Steinbeis Advanced Risk Technologies (the coordinator of CWA 15740:2008).

The objective of the meeting is to define the "way forward" which has to be communicated to CEN and DIN at latest in April 2011.

The following aspects should be explored:

1. Which standardization or other bodies (CEOC?) are interested in advancing the standardization aspects of the European RBI
2. Which companies/persons would like to be involved into this activity
3. CEN TCs possibly interested in "hosting" the topic
4. Possibility of establishing "small TC" (2-3 years lifetime, just one EN)
5. Define the principal directions of contents updating of CWA 15740:2008 – e.g. with respect to new US, Japanese and Korean docs, and developments in countries like China
6. Define the Operating team for the new European RBI (EN based on CWA 15740:2008)
7. Prepare the report for the CEOC GA in May in Warsaw (if appropriate) or at some other occasion(s)

Earlier this year, you were sent an email with a questionnaire concerning standards and standardization in FP7 NMP projects.

We have learnt that we could bring the standardization process closer to our projects. Therefore we will organize a seminar at which we will not only go deeper into the standardization process, but also explain the use of standardisation as a means of exploitation and dissemination.

We are not able to provide you with an agenda yet, but if you are interested in attending we would like to ask you to already now block December 14th in your agenda. The NMP Seminar on Standards & Standardisation will take place on our premises in Brussels.

As mentioned in the previous email, the goal of the seminar is to bring the standardisation process closer to our projects  - not only by going deeper into the standardisation process, but also by explaining the use of standardisation as a means of exploitation and dissemination.

About the workshop

The objective of the workshop is to develop cooperation between Europe and China on emerging risks, as a follow up of the 1st China-Europe Risk Forum that took place in October 2009 in Beijing, hosted by BMILP and sponsored by SRA-Europe and EU-VRi.

About the workshop

FP7 project iNTeg-Risk (www.integrisk.eu-vri.eu) is dealing with early recognition, monitoring and integrated management of emerging, new technology related risks. Over 60 organisations and more than 350 persons have committed themselves to develop a harmonised EU-answer to these emerging risks, which are considered as one of the major problems for the competitiveness of the EU innovation industry. One of the important pillars in the interdisciplinary approach of iNTeg-Risk project is the involvement of social aspects and corporate responsibility throughout the whole life cycle of new technologies covered by the project.
In this workshop, we would like to bridge the gap between different CSR-relevant groups, who might already work according to CSR-related concepts, but are not in-line with other units; like differences in comprehension and application of CSR-concepts among engineers and businessmen.
As the target group for this workshop is, apart from invited externals, the project consortium itself with persons mostly having technical background, this event (and the iNTeg-Risk project itself) is a one of the kind opportunity to address an interested and dedicated group of persons (engineers), whose work within the project can be considered as a test bed for CSR concepts and approaches, which will find their application within the project and its results. Main expected benefits for the participants are:

• Learning from application of sustainability concepts in other sectors (engineering vs. business/financial).
• Get in touch with experienced global players in sustainability reporting in order to elaborate appropriate concepts for New Technologies and its related emerging risks.
  

Foreseen participants for this workshop are project members and CSR/Sustainability responsible persons of companies and public authorities.

About the workshop

The workshop will address the issue of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) as used, or planned to be used in iNTeg-Risk Project (www.integrisk.eu-vri.eu). In the project KPIs are one of the four main cornerstones of the methodology for assessing and managing emerging risks linked to New Technologies (the other three being the IRGC Framework, UML and Basel-II-like procedure for assessing the risks). In particular, the application of KPIs for the 17 ERRAs of iNTeg-Risk (ERRAs – Emerging Risks Representative Applications) is supposed to be looked at in more detail. This should be the case both for the ERRA-specific KPIs and for the KPIs used to compare ERRAs and single risk issues within each of them.
Main concepts developed by organizations like OECD, HSE/HSL, CCPS or VCI will be discussed in the first part of the workshop. Application of these and other concepts is foreseen to be tackled in the second and third part of the workshop, where also the practical aspects of these applications, including tools and the practical view from the industry on the use of indicators will be presented and discussed.
Main expected benefits for the participants are:

• Introduction to the KPI concepts, by their developers
• Presentation of examples of application, both within iNTeg-Risk and outside iNTeg-Risk
• Exchange of experiences in using KPIs both within iNTeg-Risk and in other projects/activities

About the course

The Nanosmile website www.nanosmile.org , developed in parallel of FP6 NanoSafe 2 has been available full web since June, 2008. Initially implemented as an e-learning support available internally at the Atomic Energy Commissary, Nanosmile has been gradually opened to the public at large. This website is now specifically dedicated to support:

1. Professional training sessions in order to guarantee adoption of best practices,
2. Institutional education program in order to make students aware to emerging risks,
3. Public information dissemination in order to structure societal dialogue.
   

FP7 NanEX, NanoHouse and NanoCode projects will feed Nanosmile content and structure during 2010-13 periods. iNTeg-Risk T4.10.7 will closely connect the Nanosmile website to the iNTeg-Risk One-Stop-Shop in different possible implementations.
This course proposes a Nanosmile concept and feedback presentation. Three different modules  nanotraining, nanoeducation and nanodialogue will be structured as follows:

1. Presentation: initial goals, implementation phase, feedback experience
2. Generic methodological questions: discussion on the basis of IRGC, EMRF framework
3. Specific content questions: answers will be supported by a detailed website visit

Emerging Risk Managements relies very much on early warning information.
The internet gives a real-time access to almost infinite sources of information – semantic web technology offers the framework to build efficient and effective solutions to generate automatically highly relevant information for dedicated knowledge needs.
This course will give an overview about the technologies (and the providers) that fit early warning needs in risk management.
We will give an introduction to the concepts of semantic web technologies and semantic intelligences, and we will show running solutions in the sectors of nano-technologies, alternative energy, pharma product risks, and others.

M-RECT Kick-off meeting Athens

Dear Colleagues,

   After following your suggestions, I have improved the planning of the start up meeting, as it is presented in the attached draft Agenda.  Please feel free to send your advice regarding items you wish to be added, by Tuesday morning.

   As you may recall from our last year discussions, several research actions should be reconsidered; a few in the light of recent developments. The Discussion-Planning session on April 27th will serve not as a discussion of the relevant text of Annex I, but mainly it will focus on certain selected advanced elements of the research; primarily, on those which will contribute to obtain the leading edge on developing the foreseen materials. While all partners are invited in this session, the contribution of the specialized ones is essential. In the following weeks, I shall contact the partners involved and formulate the relevant topics with them.

    Additionally, bilateral discussions - held, mainly, during the technological trip - will advance the understanding of the different approaches. With reference to  the  technological trip mentioned– as has always happened in previous project meetings -IMMG will cover with company funds all the last two meeting days consortium expenses, with the exception of the hotel room cost at Delphi.

    Since a few partners have not advanced the GPFs yet or confirmed their acceptance to the Consortium Agreement, please proceed accordingly at your earliest convenience.

Als Koordinator werde ich rasch zunächst mit Herrn Jovanovic die Restrukturierung unserer Wirtschaftspartner-Struktur vornehmen sowie einen Zeitplan für den Rahmenplan überlegen - mit dem Ziel eines Projektstarts bereits 6/2010. Der Projektträger wünscht dafür eine rasche Bearbeitung, um den Takt der übrigen 6 ausgewählten Projekte noch zu erreichen. Wir haben eine Konsortialbesprechung auf den 17. oder 18. Februar bei Frau Dr. Börner in Düsseldorf vorterminiert (einschließlich Unternehmenspartnern) - bitte "safe the date"!

Die Unternehmenspartner werden parallel von mir angesprochen.

The discussion points have been, how to write right emails with correct speech, structure and subject.
Related to the wrong email from November 24, 2009 with the wrong subject and topic iNTeg-Risk: Personnel Data.

Agenda items:

Results:

1. It is very important to get a good incorporation with emails and office related work. That we don´t make mistakes by writing emails.
2. Business Communication is also an important item to compare notes and to learn from each other. That can help to make less mistakes in daily work.
3. Sending of emails in correct way. Be sure that you use the right speech and the right structure in writing emails. Also it is important to wright the right subject with the right contents. Please make sure that the CC (carbon copy) is not viewable for any participants (exception: only for internal use it can be viewable).

Actions:

1. Writing of 5 emails per day to specific participants of iNTeg- Risk (SPL, WPL, TSL).
2. The wrong email should be replaced by a new email with correct speech, structure and with excluded CC (carbon copy).
3. later on: More and more/ all participants in CRM should get the new email.

2. EU-VRi/R-Tech: HR-Map + QMS Statement

A. Jovanovic asked the participants to do the follows

2.1 The Human Resource Map shows how employees used to capacity.

2.2 We have three different activities where all employees work in it. Technical Support is the first activity which has 270 % utilization of all employees together. The second is the EU-VRi/R-Tech core activity which has 320% utilization and the last one is the administrative support with 305% utilization of all participants. The main Persons who are involved in the core activities should be able to work and spend more time with core activities like PEM, deputy CEO , CEO, CFO, PEM, CIO. To make that possible the other employees like PA, PFA should realizing the main core employees.

2.3 The QMS Requirements Acceptance Statement must be filled out and be accepted by all employees. LINK

2.4 The Employee´s Continuous Improvement Review Protocol shall be filled out by employees and superiors after a appraisal. Especially for the confirmation the Employee´s Continuous Improvement Review Protocol should be signed by CEO or CFO, or deputy CEO and the concerned employees.
