The issue of RBM, RBI, RCM

RBM (Risk Based Management), RBI (Risk-based Inspection), RCM (Reliability Centred Maintenance) tare modern techniques that provide the capability to factor safety, environmental, business and reliability considerations into the decision making process thereby providing better focus of limited resources and improving the results of equipment run, replace and repair decisions. This is accomplished by considering the likelihood of an undesirable event as well as the probable consequences. Why are many companies implementing RBM, RBI and/or RCM reporting high levels of success, i.e. optimized costs and lowering risks, while others are struggling with implementation (too much cost or just do not know what to do next), or just the inverse? RBM, RBI and/or RCM are often misunderstood and misapplied due to a lack of knowledge and experience.

The answer is often linked to the problems like:

  • Proper understanding of the benefits and limitations of the various available technologies
  • Proper understanding of the differences, benefits and limitations of qualitative versus quantitative approaches
  • Knowing what recognized and generally accepted good engineering practices, such as API, list as minimum requirements in establishing good RBI, RBM and/or RCM programs
  • Knowing the purpose for your application of RBI, RBM and/or RCM
  • Knowing the scope of equipment you should cover with RBI, RBM and/or RCM
  • Understanding how the output can serve as input to CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems) and enterprise scheduling and tracking systems
  • Knowing the future of RBI for the process industries and acceptance by regulators
From the practical point of view the above is usually linked questions like
  • Selection the most effective RBM, RBI, RCM approach
  • Management of RBM, RBI, RCM projects
  • Choosing the right technology
  • Creating specific equipment inspection plans
  • Establishing of the implementation processes for particular infrastructure and culture
